Upgrading BlogEngine.NET from 1.5 to 1.6

I’ve just finished upgrading this installation of BlogEngine.NET from 1.5.0.7 to the recently released 1.6. For my money the official upgrade instructions are some what lacking so here’s my hopefully more fool-proof guide.

Usual caveats apply – this is just a guide, you are your own person, take care when crossing the road etc.

Backup everything within your Blog directory on your website to a local directory we’ll call backup
Download BlogEngine.NET 1.6 (web) and extract the zip to a local directory we’ll call update
In the update folder remove the temporary post and page you get after first installing BlogEngine.NET – you don’t want these appearing on your blog again:
1. Delete the .xml file in App_Data\pages
2. Delete the .xml file in App_Data\posts
Copy your App_Data folder from the backup directory and paste it over the top of App_Data in the Update directory (thus all your posts/pages/users etc will be intact).
There are some new elements in App_Data\settings.xml that need to be added back in (since we just replaced the new file with your existing one):
1. Open App_Data\settings.xml in the Update directory (this should be your old settings.xml as a result of step 4).
2. Tack the following new elements onto the bottom (the order of elements in this file is unimportant):
  
  <commentsperpage>20</commentsperpage>
  <moderationtype>1</moderationtype>
  <numberofreferrerdays>1</numberofreferrerdays>
  <commentblacklistcount>2</commentblacklistcount>
  <commentwhitelistcount>1</commentwhitelistcount>
  <enableerrorlogging>False</enableerrorlogging>
  <trustauthenticatedusers>True</trustauthenticatedusers>
Upload all the files in the update directory to your blog over-writing everything
On your FTP site, delete the App_Code\ExtensionManager directory. (This code has been moved into the BlogEngine.Core.dll in version 1.6. Not deleting this sub-folder will lead to errors.)

If you can see this post – the above worked for me. Happy blogging and well done to the BlogEngine.Net team – really looking forward to seeing if the new anti-spam features solve my comment spam issues.

I just tried upgrading according to your steps and the Update site does not "see" the posts and pages from the Backup site. Any ideas?

Hey - sorry to hear you're having problems. Bit difficult to diagnose remotely - if you want to zip up your entire blog directory and put it somewhere for me to download I'll happily take a look.

Thanks for the how-to. There's a couple of very important things missing though:

1. If you use a database to store your stuff (as opposed to XML = the default), you'll have to execute the adequate script - these are found in the setup folder (including a read-me) of the update folder.

2. You'll have to copy all subfolders of the widgets-folder from the backup folder over to in update folder, if you have installed any additional widgets.

3. If you added additional themes, these will have to be copied (as in 2.); note that there may have been changes applied to the CSS files, i.e. there might be newer versions of the theme(s) you use.

4. If you added/changed pictures in the pic folder, you'll have to copy these, too

I agree about leaving support in for IIS 6. While it wouldn't be an issue for me personally I think it would alienate a lot of users who rely on shared hosting.
I would like to see more features added to the next release of BE such as a photo gallery/slide show built in and comment administration

Hi, good morning. I'd recommend adding a privacy policy section to your webpage and putting something like "your privacy is important to us and we will not share your information unless required to by law". If you're upgrading from BE.NET 1.5, there are a couple of changes to be aware of, including one change you must make related to the ExtensionManager sub-folder in the App_Code folder.
